lyrics

a little boy went to a pond
took off his clothes to swim
he put his feet into the mud
when looking back at him
a face emerged and just a face
as though it wore a green-black hood
his eyes turned to the little child
who turned and ran fast as he could
when he got home to his front door
he had no key to enter
then looking up he saw the pale face
staring back at him through the winder
why did you run from me said the face
as it opened up the door
i was scared that you would hurt me
said the trembling little boy
how strange for i was only trying
to catch a magic fish
i caught it and i brought it here
so you could use one wish
that i'll give you
i wish that i could be a bird
and fly away to a tree
are you quite sure?
said the ghostly face
and the boy said indeed i be.
with a snap of the boy's eyes closed
he fell down in a dream
an eagle flew through the window
and picked his body clean
soon his mother came home
and his father shortly after
when they saw the eagle staring at them
they both met him with laughter
until they saw the skeleton
of their little boy lying
on his bed picked so clean
but still not done with drying
they made a basket with his bones
a bowl out of his skull
filled it full of flowers and stones
and the milk of their goat
and bone by bone the eagle took
apart the skeleton
to thicken up his nest so high
